Terrapins vs. Tigers in Inaugural Ripken Cup
Attention college baseball fans! Ripken Baseball has just made an exciting announcement: this will be the inaugural year for what will be known as the Ripken Cup. The collegiate invitational tournament will be held at Ripken Stadium, home of the Aberdeen IronBirds in Maryland.
The two-game series will be held on Tuesday, April 15th and Wednesday, May 7th, with first pitch at 7:05pm. The first ever Ripken Cup will be a showdown between two Maryland institutions: University of Maryland vs. Towson University.
By showcasing these two college baseball programs, the Ripken Cup will certainly bring welcome attention to some MLB hopefuls. Maryland team coaches as well as players are excited about the upcoming tournament:
“We are excited to be participating in this event and for the opportunity to play Towson at Ripken Stadium,” said Terps head coach John Szefc. “It is an exceptional venue and we are looking forward to two great games between two good baseball teams.”
Towson University head baseball coach Mike Gottlieb was equally enthusiastic, reportedly saying that he was “thrilled that the Ripkens have taken an interest in college baseball and are sponsoring this series between two fine college baseball programs. This can only help baseball in the state of Maryland.”
Usually the home to the Baltimore Orioles affiliate team, the Aberdeen IronBirds, Ripken Stadium has hosted similar tournaments in the past. A decade ago, it was the venue for the Division I series between U. Maryland and Georgia Tech, and has hosted Maryland State Baseball Championships since 2006.
